What To Bring to Your Initial Consultation

By Jan Hoen

Hampton Injury Law offers prospective personal injury clients a free initial consultation. The purpose of this is twofold: (1) First, this initial consultation gives the prospective client an opportunity to have his or her most pressing legal concerns addressed so that the client knows what his or her next steps should be; and (2) the initial consultation helps educate the client as to the services that Hampton Injury Law can provide and how these services will assist them in their personal injury lawsuit.

These initial consultations are necessarily limited in duration. It is important to come to your initial consultation prepared in order to get the most benefit out of your time with our office. Here are some things to bring with you so that we can better assist you during your initial consultation:

  • Your questions. It is helpful for you to write down your questions about your personal injury case ahead of time and bring this document with you. By writing down your questions, you will not have to worry about forgetting to ask us to address an important question you have during your consultation.
  • Accident Report. The police accident report contains a wealth of information useful to the attorneys during consultation. The investigating officer will have recorded driver information, whether any charges were issued, statements and/or a summary of the facts, whether any persons reported injury, whether an ambulance or towing was involved, a diagram of the collision, vehicle information, insurance information, witness information, time/date/location information, and other important facts.
  • Pictures. The old saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words” is certainly true in personal injury cases. If you took any pictures of your injuries, the scene of the accident, or the damage to the vehicles, bring these with you. Having pictures to refer to can not only help you explain your injury accident to us and will allow us a much clearer picture of what happened. This will help improve the quality of the advice we are able to give.
  • Settlement offers. If you received a settlement offer – or any other communication – from the other party or an insurance adjuster or attorney representing the other party in your dispute, we can help you understand these documents and know how to respond to them. Oftentimes at-fault parties will attempt to settle your case for as little money as possible and will ask you to waive important rights in return. During your initial consultation we can discuss what damages might be available in your case and whether or not a settlement if fair or advisable for you.
  • Your medical bills and/or records. A successful personal injury case will require evidence of the severity of your injuries, a causal connection between your injuries and another person’s negligence, and a “dollar amount” for your injuries. While we can provide general advice to you during an initial consultation without needing your medical records or bills, you will receive more detailed advice if we are able to review these documents.

Whatever the nature of your personal injury, it is important that you seek experienced legal counsel right away in order to ascertain your legal rights and be able to take appropriate steps to protect those rights. At Hampton Injury Law, Virginia personal injury lawyer Jan Hoen dedicates his practice to helping injury victims obtain the best possible resolution to their cases.
